Asteroid 7 Iris, discovered on August 13, 1847, by the English astronomer John Russell Hind, is a significant member of the asteroid belt located between Mars and Jupiter. Named after Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow, this asteroid has an estimated diameter of approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles). Iris orbits the Sun at an average distance of about 363 million kilometers (225 million miles), completing its orbit in roughly 4.6 Earth years.
